Jacky & May Hong Kong Prewedding

When we first met Jacky to discuss the logistics of his photoshoot with his fiancée, May, he requested a simple red background for the shoot. We didn’t understand why this peculiar request was made, until we saw Jacky’s Facebook post. He stated that the reasoning behind the request was because it reminded him of May’s lips; just a glance would make his heart beat out of his chest. Of course, there’s more to their love besides this! With their first encounter, Jacky already knew that she was his Mrs. Right, so it was a no-brainer when he decided to propose to her and promise a fulfilling life ahead for the both of them.

For those of you who are loyal followers of our blog, you will know Coria and Paul like they are your best friends.  They are certainly very good friends with us, from shooting their pre-wedding portraits in New York, to shooting their wedding day in Hong Kong, to newborn portraits of their first child, to now their child’s first birthday – we have been a part of their journey and it has been a privilege to watch their family grow.

It is rare that we get to be a part of a couple’s relationship in this way – we really feel like we’re a part of the furniture, so to speak.  This time, we were witness to Coria and Paul’s daughter’s first birthday.  Coria had many ideas with regards to the photoshoot and she has amazing taste – arranging many beautiful things for her daughter’s photoshoot!

It was also the first time I worked with cake mess and we were very interested in how Coria and Paul’s daughter would react to the cake – whether she would enjoy it, etc.  In fact, it was a bit of a scary experience for the little girl and unexpected for us as we didn’t realise she would be afraid of cake!  We definitely managed to get some unexpected shots during the photoshoot!

Maria & Horace-10th anniversary

Bear with us a moment whilst we take you back to the beginning of this story.

Ten years ago, we met at the Island Shangri-La hotel.  At that time, we didn’t know each other very well but we were working the same wedding.  If I remember correctly, there was even a little bit of a ‘debate’ that day regarding the recording of an audio track.  To be clear, we were the photographers on that day and Maria was there with her live band.  Ten years ago, hiring a live band for your wedding was still quite a new thing; there were lots of ideas back then and I remember there being a string quartet that day too.

Over the years, we slowly became really good friends.  This friendship has been a part of our lives for the last twelve years and we are very lucky to have kept such a real friendship going in this industry for such a long time.  Maria is one of our greatest friends; this might sound a bit cheesy but we have one of those relationships where we just know what the other is thinking without saying a word.  Whether it is on a professional or personal basis, we have had each other’s backs and we feel so, so lucky to have had such good support.  Many times, Maria has given us brilliant advice during our difficult days and we are very grateful for her presence in our lives.

Over the years, we’ve noticed that whilst Maria’s live band plays great music, the sound of Maria’s laughter beats it every time.  To have Maria and Horace ask us to shoot their tenth anniversary portraits is a great honour.  Obviously they’re now older (and with different figures than twelve years ago!), but they’re still such a sweet and happy couple that any photograph we could take of our dear friends would be beautiful.

We hope Maria and Horace continue to be happy and to continue bringing us great music.  And Maria – don’t quit the wine… you’re at your best when you’ve had a glass or two!

HK prewedding

For many people who choose to shoot their pre-wedding portraits in Hong Kong, it is often preferred that we go to locations that are fairly green and nature-looking. In a busy metropolis such as Hong Kong, it can actually be quite easy to find relatively quiet, simple green backgrounds for portrait-taking. In Cyril & Clarins case, we also chose to shoot in our studio as well, using lighting techniques to highlight individual characteristics of both the bride and groom. Sometimes, it’s not about what you wear to a photoshoot that can create amazing images; oftentimes, it’s more to do with how our couple interacts with each other and so even dressed in casual wear, we are particularly pleased with the images that resulted.

‘如果我是陳奕迅’ Mr

No matter what your taste is in music, I think it’s safe to say that there aren’t many people in Hong Kong who don’t know the rock band ‘Mr.’  Lead vocal Alan and his lovely bride-to-be Sally very kindly chose Johnny Productions to shoot their pre-wedding portraits and wedding day.

In this set of pre-wedding portraits, both the bride and groom wanted a natural feel – of course, there was also the inclusion of Alan’s favourite instrument, the guitar.  Throughout the shooting, it was obvious that Alan has an eye for the details, loves beauty and of course, has a very sweet bride.  We had a fantastic time with them both; they preferred quiet locations and shooting at our studio where they could be relaxed and more intimate.

We love these portraits; thanks again to Alan and Sally for their trust in our work!

Studio portrait

Weather conditions were cold outside but we were unaffected inside the studio. We spent a lot of time setting up lots of different types of lighting to create different moods for this particular shoot. It was both challenging and interesting to be given such a simple guideline and see how we came up with something new.

I’m quite proud of this set of portraits. It just goes to show that pre-wedding portraits can be shot inside and turn out really well.
